I talk a lot here about my goals for One Daily Link: highlighting respectful commentary, promoting more thoughtful columnists, etc. Above all of this, though, is a desire to lend value and perspective to each party’s beliefs. Sometimes that can be achieved with an incisive column by Republicans about Republican policies or by Democrats about Democratic policies. But I think it’s more persuasive, not to mention constructive, when a Republican gives credence to Democratic concerns and vice-versa. Then the case being made is less about preaching and more about understanding. It also shows an honest appreciation of the nuances inherent to virtually every political issue. That’s why today’s featured columnist is hands down my favorite. Maybe I link to him too much but (a) this website’s free, so I can only feel so bad about that and (b) I firmly believe we can’t get to where we need to be without his brand of writing. The more we reward thinkers like him, the more others will be incentivized to follow his example.
