I didn’t set out this morning to find the perfect follow-up to yesterday’s post, but here it is. The point of featuring yesterday’s column was to highlight not just the existence, but the importance, of good news. Today’s column drives that point home by highlighting a trove of good news about our fellow Americans. The statistics it provides are eye-popping.
Despite what anchors on both sides of the opinion news divide would have us believe, 91% of American adults feel equal protection under the law is extremely important to the nation’s identity (that number goes up to 98% when factoring in those who think it’s somewhat important). 91% feel the right to vote is extremely important to the nation’s identity (98% including those who think it’s somewhat important). 90% feel freedom of speech is extremely important to the nation’s identity (97% including those who think it’s somewhat important). The list goes on and on, refuting the narrative of strife defining the news today.
None of this is to say there aren’t divisions in our country. It’s not to say there isn’t dysfunction in Washington. But the polls show that, despite our disagreements, every day Americans aren’t remotely as divided as we think. That’s not just good news. It’s a fact.
