Stories about media bias tend to fall into two categories. The first and far more common is the cherry-picked anecdote from a pundit with zero investment in the organization they’re attacking. The second category is the critique from someone hoping the organization rights itself and succeeds. Those are the stories and — more importantly — the people worth paying attention to. People like Stephen Hayes and Jonah Goldberg (formerly of Fox News) and James Bennet (formerly of The New York Times) aren’t trying to tear something down. They’re trying to call attention to what they believe needs fixing. Today’s columnist is in the same league as those listed above, yet he’s also unique in that he still works at the place he’s hoping to fix. Whether I agree with his critiques or not (and I won’t say if I do), I wish him the best. He has my deepest respect.
