Yesterday notwithstanding, there’s been a great deal of incisive, nuanced commentary surrounding the 2024 election. The number of writers willing to reckon with the shortcomings of their arguments and the strengths of the opposing party’s is remarkable. It shows an honesty and eagerness to understand sorely lacking in our more pronounced punditry.

Case in point is today’s columnist. He has a clear opinion on how a matter ought to play out, yet he understands his preferred course would lead to more national discord. As such, he’s willing to entertain practical alternatives even if they’re in direct opposition to his desired outcome. This is commentary geared toward a solution, not a fight, and while it might be tempting to dismiss it as rare, it isn’t. It’s just harder to find… and well worth the time to track down.
