It wasn’t my intention to open the year with a column about Donald Trump. However, Chuck Rosenberg’s piece in Politico about the release of Trump’s tax returns is honest, respectful, nuanced, and principled. In short, it’s everything One Daily Link was designed to promote. Which makes it the perfect column to kick off the new year.

Rosenberg, a former U.S. Attorney and Chief of Staff to James Comey, doesn’t care for Donald Trump. He calls him “greedy, dishonest, selfish, narcissistic and reckless” (I stand by calling the piece respectful). Given that, one can probably guess his opinion of the Democrat-controlled House Ways and Means Committee making Trump’s tax returns public… and one would be wrong. Rosenberg believes the document release was “unfair.” For one thing, it was without precedent. For another, it added nothing to the committee’s report. In Rosenberg’s opinion, there was no substantive reason for releasing the returns and so, despite his personal antipathy toward the former president, he believes they should have remained private.

As I said at the top, today’s column epitomizes the commentary One Daily Link was created to highlight. It’s thoughtful and respectful. It’s also extraordinarily principled. By reacting to Trump’s situation with deliberation rather than emotion, Rosenberg proves he’s credible and serious. Why would we ever settle for less?
