Like Friday’s column, today’s is written by someone who is less of a commentator and more of an expert. Geo Saba is the chief of staff to Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA), meaning he is deep in the weeds on politics and policy. Given the perceived partisanship on Capitol Hill, one could forgiven for assuming a Democratic House staffer would have nothing good to say about his colleagues on the other side of the aisle. And yet that’s not the case. His entire column is about this Congress’ potential for bipartisanship. I have doubts myself, but Saba’s case is a convincing one.

As the column title makes clear, Saba lives with two Republican House staffers. That a chief of staff for one of the better known House Democrats can live with two Republicans (and vice-versa) is a truly uplifting sign. While our political parties are supposedly warring across the country, in the nation’s capital they’re sharing a kitchen. That’s no small thing. But Saba has additional, more substantive reasons to be hopeful well worth considering. There are still sure to be impasses and brinkmanship. No one’s arguing there won’t. But if someone on the inside of our politics is offering cause for hope, shouldn’t we listen to them? At the very least, we should be optimistic about the next generation of lawmakers.
