JANUARY 9, 2024
The dynamics of the 2024 presidential race are so unique that no analysis seems too far fetched once you drill down on it. After all, the incumbent is by far the oldest president in the nation’s history and has been since the day he took office. His challenger is charged with multiple crimes ranging from election interference to mishandling classified documents. And to top it all off, a majority of the country doesn’t want either of them in the race, even though each seems destined to be his party’s nominee.
These are deeply wild times, which makes today’s column less of a curiosity than it would have been twelve, eight, or even four years ago. How likely any of its prescriptions are to come to pass is hard to say. That any of them is possible, though, says something about where we are. I wonder where we’ll be a month from now.
