Today’s link is the third in a row from a conservative writer. Don’t mistake this as proof of our ideology — we’ve linked to liberal writers three days in a row, too. This has to do with the positions each side is taking over the Trump indictments. The left’s argument is fairly straightforward: he did it, send him to jail. There’s nothing wrong with this line of thinking at all. It’s just that, for our purposes, there’s not much more to explore there. The right has a finer needle to thread when making its case. This of course can lead to unserious people making unserious arguments, but it can also lead to thoughtful people making thoughtful arguments. Which brings us to Rich Lowry’s column, in which he considers the benefits of a pardon for Trump.

We nearly passed over this piece when we saw its title (“A Trump Pardon Could Drain Poison from the System”). Our thinking was Trump should serve his sentence if convicted — a pardon would only encourage bad actors. But, as mentioned above, thoughtful people make thoughtful points. One doesn’t have to agree with Lowry’s conclusions, but it is worth hearing what he has to say. Less rancor, after all, would be a good thing. It’s just a matter of weighing the cost.
