As we’ve mentioned before, our favorite political commentary is that in which the writer criticizes his or her own party, because their goal isn’t to rally the troops or score rhetorical points. The writer has an actual dog in the fight. They want to help their party, and so the party should at least consider what they have to say.

Jonah Goldberg, the founding editor of National Review Online and a former Fox News contributor, was once a popular voice among Republicans. His stance against Donald Trump has caused his star to fall somewhat, and that’s too bad. He’s an insightful commentator with the best interests of his party at heart. Hence his column today, in which he encourages fellow conservatives to stop protesting the recent charges against Trump by citing the lack of charges against Hillary Clinton. The uneven application of justice shouldn’t negate the even application of principles, he says. While we typically only make a point of endorsing the tone of a featured column, today it seems safe to endorse the argument as well, as it’s fairly universal. None of this means Republicans have to listen to Goldberg, but they ought to take a long time to consider. After all, the man’s just trying to help.
