After sifting through thousands of editorials for One Daily Link, I’ve determined all political commentary falls into one of three categories. In the first, one political party attacks the other. In the second, one party pats itself on the back. In the third, one party looks inward to assess how it can actually improve. Those are the three groups, with no deviation. I’ve felt safe in assuming there wouldn’t be a fourth. But even if one came along, I told myself, it would never involve one party complimenting the other.
Never say never.
Today’s link has my jaw on the floor. Jason Riley, a dutifully conservative commentator, has written a piece in “The Wall Street Journal” praising Joe Biden. Of course, Riley still has his complaints about the president, but he gives credit where he believes credit is due. He proves, at a time when our politics has become a brutal zero-sum game, that it can still be redeemed. And he does so by being principled and nuanced and generous all at once. Remarkable.
Now, do I believe this one column will singlehandedly change our political discourse? No. But I’ve been doing this for over a year and never seen a piece like this. Maybe it’s an aberration. Maybe it’s not. I have no idea. All I know is, after today, never say never.
