One Daily Link was inspired by two political commentators. The first was A.B. Stoddard, who writes from the left. The second was Jonathan Turley. At the time, I didn’t know Turley’s politics, but I did know he’d argued against Bill Clinton’s impeachment in the nineties. So when I saw his name on a piece about Trump’s first impeachment, I was certain where he’d stand. And I was wrong. He argued against Trump’s impeachment, too. It was a lightbulb moment, realizing there were columnists out there taking positions based on principle rather than party. It didn’t necessarily mean I agreed with him, but then that shouldn’t be one’s reason for reading commentary.

Since the Trump column, I’ve regularly followed Turley, which is easy to do since he posts at least twice a day. Sometimes his tone is overheated, but that’s been a lightbulb moment for me, too. Why toss him aside for a few disagreeable posts when the bulk of his work is well-considered? Everyone should get a few mulligans. His column today on the Supreme Court’s affirmative action cases is proof of why. I hope you enjoy it.
