When your opponents tell you what you’re doing wrong, it’s probably best not to listen. When your teammates tell you, that’s a different story.
Today’s column, a Republican’s post-mortem on the midterms, comes from Daniel Henninger. Prior to Tuesday, he predicted the fabled Republican wave. Now, with the wave failing to materialize, he’s making prescriptions, the foremost being for Republicans to dump Trump. Candidates who backed the former president’s election nonsense lost. Candidates who stood up to it won, often resoundingly. Trump might not be able to draw that line, but it should be clear to everyone else. And it should be clear that if he runs again, he will lose again.
With the midterms in the rearview, the Republican Party apparatus has a lot of soul-searching to do. When Donald Trump chimes in, as he will inevitably do, they need to file it away as advice from an opponent, not a teammate.
