Since One Daily Link was founded with the idea that there is more to our politics than the extremes of both parties, and since the midterms have borne that out, it seems worth dwelling upon the results a little longer. Today’s featured column is the second post-mortem in a row from a Republican, this time Tim Alberta. Unlike Henninger yesterday, Alberta has always been deeply suspicious of Trump. For him, the advantages rarely if ever outweighed the downsides. So he comes at Tuesday’s results with a different perspective. Namely: I told you.
While this is a column by a Republican for Republicans, Democrats shouldn’t whistle past it. Underlying Alberta’s criticisms of the GOP is the unavoidable conclusion that Democrats got lucky this year. Individually, Trump or Dobbs might have given the left some shelter from a red wave. Together, they created a sea wall. It’s hard to see that happening again, so the left will have to refocus its messaging, same as the right. Maybe since moderate voters made such a difference this cycle, the parties should try talking to them. After all, Tuesday made it clear there’s more to our politics than the parties’ extremes.
