The headline for today’s link (“Here’s How the US Shouldn’t Respond to China Protests”) intrigued me, the content challenged me, and the conclusion hasn’t left me. This is the kind of column One Daily Link exists to highlight.
With protests breaking out in China over the sometimes deadly consequences of the CCP’s Zero-COVID policy, I believed now was the ideal time for the US to highlight the failures of an increasingly authoritarian Chinese government in the hopes of bringing about lasting change. As I said above, though, today’s link challenged my thinking… to the point I thought the author was insulting those who disagreed with him. He wasn’t. Writer Michael D. Swaine is only ever objective and thoughtful. The problem was mine — a knee-jerk reaction to opposing viewpoints that still creeps up on me. And, after considering Swaine’s points, his approach makes far more sense than anything I might have favored. Because his goal isn’t to accomplish something by making a statement. It’s to make a statement by accomplishing something. Hats off to him for taking the tougher, more meaningful road.
