Congressional Republicans’ House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government has made some waves in conservative media since its formation, but its impact has mostly stopped there. Obstacles to success vary from an unserious chairman in Jim Jordan to indiscriminate cries of weaponization that dilute the word’s meaning.
Potentially substantive accusations do exist, though. One such instance involves government censorship of social media, purportedly to combat disinformation. Government entities and private disinformation watchdog organizations consistently deny any meaningful coordination. Yet today, journalist Michael Shellenberger testified before the subcommittee on evidence of coordination he received from a whistleblower. He also published, two days ago, his first piece compiling the evidence. It’s a dense but fascinating read. We’ll see what the response is, but if the story withstands scrutiny, it deserves an audience beyond conservative media.
