There’s been a lot of breathless commentary about the plea deals some of Donald Trump’s former lawyers have made in the Georgia election interference case. On the surface, it makes sense. How often do a president’s ex-advisors agree to testify in a case in which the president is also charged? And yet, sobriety must intercede. Because once one takes a breath, what have these lawyers actually pleaded guilty to? Conspiring to file false documents. Aiding and abetting false writings and statements. These are not nothing, but they’re also not the racketeering conspiracy comprising the top charge against Trump. So while it may be diverting to read speculation on how bad this all is for the former president, it’s not terribly informative. Hence our column today by Ankush Khardori, who has no great love for Donald Trump, yet doesn’t let that cloud his view of the case. Khardori is proof, as always, that strong analysis is rarely breathless. He’s using his oxygen to think, not scream. What a novel idea.
