On Friday, U.S. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) was indicted on multiple charges of bribery and corruption. The details of the indictment are rather surprising, with the Justice Department alleging Menendez took hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to, among other crimes, sway a criminal investigation into a friend and drum up arms sales to Egypt. The senator has maintained he is innocent and said he will not resign. At the moment, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is standing by Menendez, saying he’s entitled to the presumption of innocence, and he’s not wrong. But is Menendez entitled to keep his seat as one of New Jersey’s two senators while his trial unfolds over the next year or two? That’s another matter.

In today’s featured column, former federal prosecutor Dennis Aftergut lays out his reasons why Menendez should resign. For one thing, the people of New Jersey deserve an undistracted senator. For another, Democrats can ill afford to defend Menendez against his indictments while they attack Trump for his. The list goes on. It’s still early days, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens, but the senator seems determined to stay in office — he just held a press conference announcing the fact. Who knows how long the choice will rest with him.
